Brenna Tarrant proved a pivotal player in the Swans win against the Giants in the AFLW's first round.
Game commentators reported that Brenna made "three game saving marks" as the Giants threatened late in the match, in the AFLW's first round of the season on Father's Day.
Tarrant, 21, "was composed to not only take the marks, but to move the ball into space and out of danger with her kicks," afl.com.au reported.
"To start off with a win was pretty awesome, for it to be against the Giants was another thing," she told the Gazette.
"The team wants success and I think the path we're on is the right one. We're a tight knit group so we're super supportive of each other.
"The challenge is probably trying to be patient. We only get 10 games a year, so for the rest of the year you're trying to work on your skills, fitness, etc ... for a small period of time."
There has been a flow on in their game from "the Matildas effect" with "lots of young girls [coming to the games] with their families".
"It's heartwarming, the attendance was far less last season," she added.
But she still needs a "side job" to get by.
"We don't quite have a liveable wage at the moment, but thanks to our Players'Association, the idea of footy being a full-time job is nearing.
"I've always dreamed of being where I am. Knowing I'm one of about 500 women that are actually living this exact dream, does make me pretty excited. Now, I just want to be the best teammate I can be and become a small part in this team's prolonged success.
The former East Blaxland player now lives close to the Sydney stadium to train. Mum Heidi Rickard said it's wonderful having her daughter in the same state after she spent three years in Melbourne, including during the COVID lockdown period.

What a fantastic weekend for the St Columba’s Show Team at the Castle Hill Show! More than 20 attended, including a very enthusiastic group of Year 7 students who were excited to be part of the day. Our senior students achieved some outstanding results. Maddi L placed 2nd in Junior Judging and has qualified to compete at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in two weeks’ time. In parading, all of our senior competitors made it through to the final, with Jovina M (Year 12) taking out 1st place and also qualifying for the Sydney Royal. Olivia P placed 3rd in the same event. Summer S (Year 8) achieved a terrific 5th place in a very strong 13 Years final. We were also incredibly proud of Eden J and Eliza W who were judging for the first time and did an outstanding job making it through to the speaking final. Eden then went on to place 2nd overall in the Under 15s – a wonderful achievement. Congratulations to every student who represented the College with such enthusiasm and pride, and a special thank you to Mrs Sibbald for her dedication and support of the team.13 Mar 2026

This morning our community at St Columba’s came together to celebrate International Women’s Day with a wonderful breakfast in the College quad. Students, staff and guests enjoyed a delicious start to the day, accompanied by beautiful background music performed by our talented students. Following breakfast, the community gathered for our International Women’s Day Assembly and the presentation of the 2026 Sr Anne Henson International Women’s Day Award. This year’s recipient was Dr Naomi Cooper (College Captain 2007), whose achievements and leadership continue to inspire the next generation of young women at St Columba’s. In her acceptance speech, Dr Cooper reminded us all that progress towards equality is a shared responsibility, telling the College community: “While some days it feels like we are getting nowhere fast in achieving gender parity, I take heart that it is small changes from individuals like you and me that edge us closer to equality. People of all genders have a role to play.” Thank you to everyone who helped make this morning’s celebration so special. Thank you especially to staff and students from Xavier College, Penola, St Finbar's and St Canice's who joined us at the event. Together we continue to honour the women who have shaped our community and encourage the leaders of tomorrow. Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese
